About the artist – Bruce Green

I think it fair to say that sawdust naturally runs in my veins.

Much of my childhood life was connected to wood and woodworking in one fashion or another. My grandfather owned hundreds of acres of farmland and woods in mid-western Michigan. From the woods he cut timber, pulling it out of the woods with teams of horses to his sawmill. His saw mill was belt-driven off an old tractor turning a saw blade taller than me at the time. There he made crates for the Michigan fruit farmers. No fancy power tools, just hammer, nails and sweat.

My dad carried on the woodworking tradition into carpentry. He taught me more about woodworking and attention to detail. This foundation instilled a drive to go above the average more than may have I realized at the time. My dad kept the tradition going as my first tool box; power drill, various tools and finishing sander were given to me by my dad. I’ll never forget the nervousness I felt the first time he came to my home for a visit and would see my woodworking for the first time. It meant nothing that I was in my 40s; this was the ultimate test in my mind. His response, I believe, set my course to continue in this craft and press well beyond the belt-driven sawmill.
